I have really enjoyed some of Abbott's other books, so I had high hopes for this one. Marketed as the story of sugar, the majority of the book was really a story about the slave trade. While the histories of sugar and the slave trade are inextricably linked, it really did feel as if the closing few chapters (after the slavery discussion) were an afterthought to wrap everything up, with much left to be discussed. "'Sugar' is epic in ambition and briskly written, interweaving the invention of the global sugar industry with its far-reaching effect on New World slavery, the environment and, in Ms. Abbott's words, 'the addiction of millions of people to sweetness and to unhealthy, disease-causing diets.'" "Sugar" offers a compelling and surprising look at the sweet commodity, from the ways in which it Africanized the cane fields of the Caribbean to how it fueled the Industrial Revolution and jump-started the fast-food craze. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
