Great book for a large, mixed age group. The illustrations are large and bold and each one had a select few words, followed by a page of more in depth information. Recommended for a day when a teacher covers for more than just her own class and needs to stretch the attention span limit.

An exceptional counting book that goes from 1 to 20 then creatively loops to 1 again. It features such gems as 16 catfish whiskers and 9 opossum babies! A neat feature of this book is that it shows the number very large as well as the spelling of the number (e.g. 12, twelve). The illustrations are lino-cutting or wood engraving. They are masterful! I especially liked the use of tinting to create slight shadows that really bring the critters to life! ( )

I like the vibrant colors in the images and that the author/illustrator provide aspects in the drawings for kids to count. I also like that the story goes beyond the numbers by having kids identify the numbers within the images. The descriptions of the animals in the back of the book is good for readers (including adults!) who need a challenge in the Spanish language. ( )

A fantastic counting book of critters with teeth, tails, and tentacles.

The crisp, colorful illustrations are what drives this unique counting book. Instead of counting quantities of animals, author Christopher Wormell counts numbers of items on (or associated with) animals (20 barnacle shells, 2 camel humps, 14 white rings on a lemur). This book appeals to a very large audience and could easily be incorporated into science or math instruction. ( )
