Paws, claws, and hoofprints--life-size!A stunningly illustrated introduction to the animal world that will have kids on the prowl.   When children learn to recognize and read animal tracks they're actually mastering an ancient language of shapes and patterns--and gaining knowledge of the natural world. Acclaimed artist and naturalist Jim Arnosky has created a breathtaking and informative reference on the subject, filled with intricately drawn prints from creatures both wild and domestic, as well as large-scale paintings of the animals in their environments. Some of the art, labeled in Arnosky's own handwriting, even looks as if it came straight out of his personal notebooks. And best of all, many of the tracks are true to size, so kids can compare the trace left by a big-footed polar bear (whose paws act as snowshoes in its icy home) with that of a small bird. Adding to the eye-catching illustrations are four awesome gatefolds that display paintings of a bobcat, wolf, deer, and a variety of hoofed animals right next to their prints. Every spread has plenty of details on how to interpret the footprint, and the featured menagerie includes bighorn sheep and goats, chipmunks and rabbits, grizzlies and brown bears, horses and burros, domestic cats and dogs, and even slithering reptiles! This is the perfect gift for a budding naturalist, animal lover, or artist.… (meer)

The reader is taken on a journey to compare and contrast animal footprints in nature. Arnosky shows the prints in actual size, which enthralls the reader in realizing how big they really are.

A compelling guide to the young naturalist with life-size illustrations of animal tracks. This book is targeted towards young readers, but I was finding out a lot of new information, as well. The book as some fold-out pages so readers can really get a better idea of what tracks look like and what they may mean if found in the wilderness. I appreciate that this is a nonfiction book, but has just the right amount of text to go with the images. There is enough information to teach readers about tracks, but the information is not overwhelming. I am pleased by this book and very curious about others Jim Arnosky has written/illustrated. ( )

This book explains about different kinds of tracks wildlife can make, from hoofed animals to snakes! Each page explains a different animal or type of track and how they travel. It tells what the reader can learn from following animal tracks and how they truly tell a story about the animal.

This nonfiction picture book teaches students to identify animal tracks properly, along with teaching skills about species and their particular habitat associations. This book would be great for a scientific discussion or for a class field excursion into a natural setting.

I believe this book is a picture book biographies but also a sort of guide. Its introduces the children to animals and their foot prints. The text structure of this book is that there is a picture of a print with the information typed below, and some of the information for a certain animals goes to 2 or 3 pages with other
pictures of the animal in full size. This book has large format text and is very simple organized. He does have a topic posted in the left hand corner of each page but it is written small. I think the pictures do a better job on explaining the main topic. The writing is narrative because the way the tone is to this book, I feel likesomeone is telling me about a certain animal
I really thought this book was interesting. ( )
