I really enjoyed some of the photos, but would have preferred if they were organized chronologically within each section. ( ) Like other volumes of this book series, The 1960s contains 400 pages of gray scale photographs taken from the Hulton Getty picture collection. The photos are organized into 13 chapters that illustrate political activity ("Movers and Shakers," "Conflict", "Protest"), social life ("Entertainment," "The Arts," "Pop," "Fashion," "Youth", "Children") and two other chapters ("The space age" and Guilt and grief", the latter showing the aftermath of natural disasters, assassinations, and accidents). Each chapter is introduced with a few paragraphs of text, and each photo bears a brief description. The text is rendered in English as well as German and French. The photographs show tantalizing glimpses of the tumultous 1960s, but the brief descriptions will be insufficient to acquaint youngers readers with the people and events, and their historical context and significance. The chosen photos reflect something of a British perspective, but with more of an international sampling than in the preceding volume (The 1950s). While the text shows attempts at objectivity, the author's opinions peek through from time to time on political issues. Overall, this book provides a worthy collection of fine photographs offered in an inexpensive format, but one short on descriptive information. With the other nine volumes, this one would make a fine portrayal of 20th century history, albeit with a Anglocentric focus. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
