Om de vrede te herstellen in het Laatste Rijk, moest Vin de Opperheer uitschakelen, maar dat liep anders af dan ze had verwacht. En nu is ook nog de Diepte terug - de dodelijke vorm van de alomtegenwoordige nevels. Zwaardere asregens en krachtiger aardbevingen dan ooit tevoren zijn een ware plaag. De mensheid lijkt ten dode opgeschreven...
Vins geliefde, Elend Ventra, heeft de aanslag bij de Bron der Verheffing nauwelijks overleefd en is, nu hij zijn Nevelmenskracht heeft ontdekt, op zoek naar aanwijzingen van de Opperheer zodat hij de wereld kan redden. Zijn zoektocht verloopt niet bepaald voorspoedig.
Vin voelt zich ondertussen zo schuldig over het laten ontsnappen van de vernietigende en mystieke kracht uit de Bron, dat de moed om terug te vechten haar is vergaan. Vooral als blijkt dat de kracht in staat is om de werkelijkheid te vervormen en zodoende de wereld in het tijdsbestek van een vingerknip te vernietigen.
