Jacob Freisten spends his entire days trying to be invisible to avoid harrassment by the jocks. He has it down to an art until one day something goes wrong and he has to work back stage in order to pass English. To make matters worse, Maria Tressler, the girl he loves from afar, is in the play.

What makes this somewhat predictable story good is Gary Paulsen's writing and in this case the fact that it recorded by Nick Podehl who did an excellent job of reading it. Paulsen does a great job of capturing Jacob's thoughts and feelings with humour as well as compassion. ( )
