Haley Bombauer, aka Flash Jackson, confronts the summer of her seventeenth year with glorious anticipation. She envisions herself roaming the hillsides and forests on her beloved horse, venturing farther and farther away from her sleepy hometown and her overprotective mother. But when Haley falls through the rotted roof of the barn, she is destined to spend the summer in a thigh-high cast, stuck at home with her mother, enduring visits from her spooky grandmother, and pondering the error of her impulsive ways. The year that follows will, in fact, transform not only her life but also the lives of those around her. Set in Mannville, New York, William Kowalski's signature town, here is the story of one young woman's emergence into a world that, in her words, "was not designed with girls in mind" and her efforts to find a way to fit in without giving up her independence.… (meer)

A magical book – literally; what seems to start out as a small-town coming of age story is transformed midway into an something far deeper and older as the protagonist discovers that her presumed grandmother is, among other things, a great deal older than she had ever imagined, and that she herself has a heritage she could never have suspected. Enthralling enough that I twice missed my tube stop whilst reading it. ( )

Good storytelling. This book is set in the same small town as the two previous books, so its sort of like revisiting an old friend. Also a well done story, good characters, interesting read. It didn't earn itself my little star on my booklist, which would mean "I gotta get this book for my own library someday" like his first novel did. But it was still certainly worth the time to read. I think this author has written four books, so I'll have to find the last one and give it a read. He's always pretty consistent and so far, I've liked all his books. ( )

I hadn't read any of William Kowalski's books until my brother bought this for me. Bits of it I loved, but then I'd lose it again - but still pretty damn good. ( )
