Een krachtig en praktisch pleidooi voor nieuwe energiepolitiek
Met de economische groei van landen als China, India en Brazilië zullen de mensen daar wat betreft energieverbruik het gedrag van Amerikanen kopiëren. In “De toekomst is GROEN” beschrijft Friedman de dramatische gevolgen van een paar miljard “Amerikaantjes” voor het klimaat. Hij gaat ook in op de geopolitieke gevolgen van de wereldwijde strijd om olie en gas en ook om water, nu belangrijke rivieren steeds minder en straks helemaal geen smeltwater meer leveren.
Friedman blijft echter niet steken in een verhaal dat we te veel consumeren. Het boek biedt geloofwaardige oplossingen. Hij beschrijft uitgebreid allerlei technische ontwikkelingen waarbij IT en ET (energietechnologie) bij elkaar komen. Hij maakt duidelijk dat de techniek voor energiebesparing en grootschalige energietransitie (van fossiele brandstoffen overgaan op wind en zon) er is, maar dat gevestigde belangen een grootschalige doorbraak verhinderen. Friedman laat veel mensen aan het woord met geweldige ideeën die op kleine schaal al enorm hoopgevende prestaties hebben neergezet. Friedman gelooft er ook heilig in dat die kleine voorhoede ook zal doorbreken. Het is alleen wel zaak dat de overheid door wetgeving de nieuwe technieken op een eerlijke manier laat concurreren met de nu nog vaak beschermde en gesubsidieerde oude energiewereld. Als we daarmee direct beginnen, hebben we de gevolgen nog enigszins in de hand.
Friedman heeft enorm veel relaties in de wereld van wetenschap, techniek, bedrijfsleven en politiek. Hij weet hoe de hazen daar lopen. Het boek zal veel beleidsmakers overtuigen dat je het als bedrijf en als land gaat verliezen als je de ander niet voor bent met groots investeren in de technieken van energiebesparing en energietransitie.
Misschien is Friedman iets te enthousiast geweest. Hoewel ik het boek geboeid heb gelezen, zal een pil van bijna 500 pagina's sommigen toch afschrikken. ( )
