Fiction. Mystery. Suspense. Thriller. HTML:#1 New York Times bestselling author Nelson DeMille delivers the long-awaited follow-up to his classic novel The Gold Coast.
When John Sutter's aristocratic wife killed her mafia don lover, John left America and set out in his sailboat on a three-year journey around the world, eventually settling in London. Now, ten years later, he has come home to the Gold Coast, that stretch of land on the North Shore of Long Island that once held the greatest concentration of wealth and power in America, to attend the imminent funeral of an old family servant.
Taking up temporary residence in the gatehouse of Stanhope Hall, John finds himself living only a quarter of a mile from Susan who has also returned to Long Island. But Susan isn't the only person from John's past who has reemerged: Though Frank Bellarosa, infamous Mafia don and Susan's ex-lover, is long dead, his son, Anthony, is alive and well, and intent on two missions: Drawing John back into the violent world of the Bellarosa family, and exacting revenge on his father's murdererâ??Susan Sutter. At the same time, John and Susan's mutual attraction resurfaces and old passions begin to reignite, and John finds himself pulled deeper into a familiar web of seduction and betrayal.
In The Gate House, acclaimed author Nelson Demille brings us back to that fabled spot on the North Shore â?? a place where past, present, and future collides with often unexpected re

This book is the sequel to The Gold Coast, written by the same author, and continues the story of smart-mouthed John Whitman Sutter and his wealthy wife/ex-wife, Susan Stanhope Sutter. These two are not very likable, are seriously irresponsible, and are entirely made for each other. The entire book centers around Ethel Allard's death, bringing all the original characters from the first book back to Stanhope Hall on the Gold Coast for her funeral. The first five hundred pages deal mainly with Susan and John's reunion, Susan's battle with her arrogant and controlling parents over keeping her trust fund intact, and rehashing the details of what happened in the first book. Though I felt the wait was too long, the author builds suspense for all the action—which takes place in the last six chapters. If you can endure, the end is worth it. ( )

The sequel to the Gold Coast, which meant rehashing a lot that happened in Gold Coast. But that didn't bother me as much as it did for some reviews I've read. Especially if you didn't read these books back to back, the rehashing helps, but even if you did, it fits the plot, and didn't seem too over done. Also, the reunion of Susan and John didn't bother me too much either. As long as you understand how love works, and, even slightly, understand the mindset of the characters, and their backgrounds and upbringing, you understand how they came back together. Plus, it didn't hurt that it was well written, but if you read my reviews at all, you know of my love of DeMille.
Anyway, don't read it if you haven't read Gold Coast, and if that's the case, go read Gold Coast, and then feel free to pick this one up with no reservation! ( )

The book is a sequel to "The Gold Coast", and I'm glad I didn't read that book first. Others who read both found "The Gate House" to be repetitive, but it was all new to me, which helped me enjoy it all the more. The main character, John Sutter, is something of a smart-@ss, and very sarcastic, which I enjoyed. The storyline seemed somewhat unrealistic, but it was still an entertaining read. I'll be interested in trying another DeMille book soon.

How beauteous is this garden; where the flowers of the earth vie with the stars of heaven. What can compare with the vase of yon alabaster fountain filled with crystal water? Nothing but the moon in her fulness, shining in the midst of an unclouded sky!
