It can be gobbled up quickly, will give you a taste of comfort and happiness, and is small enough not to cause you to worry about calories or excess frivolity. Mr. Malik is a middle-aged man who is a bird-watching enthusiast. He has been quietly in love with Rose Mbikwa the nature and birdwalking-guide in the natural museum, but he also has deeper secrets. All things come to a head with a competition between him and the sleek Harry Khan, recently arrived in Nairobi and thinking that he can win Rose over more easily. As the competition goes on, we learn a lot about the local birdlife, and some snippets of Nairobi life and politics (to be taken with a pinch of salt). Unexpected adventure and danger await Mr. Malik in his quest for the ultimate prize, the right to invite Rose to the annual dance. This is a lighthearted read that will leave you feeling good, it will also make you smile many times along the way. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

Reserved, honourable Mr Malik. You wouldn't notice him in a Nairobi street - except, perhaps, to comment on his carefully sculpted comb over - but beneath his unprepossessing exterior lies a warm heart and a secret passion. Not even his friends at the Asadi Club know it, but Mr Malik is head-over-heels in love with the leader of the Tuesday morning bird walk of the East African Ornithological Society, Rose Mbikwa. While Mr Malik hesitantly plans how he will ask Rose to the annual Hunt Ball, flashy Harry Kahn arrives in town and makes it clear that he too has Rose in his sights. When Mr Malik blurts out his feelings at the Club a wager is set - whoever sees the most birds in a week will ask Rose to the ball. With boats, planes and guides to get him to the choicest bird-watching spots in Kenya, Harry Kahn's soon noting down everything from pearl-breasted swallows to spur-winged plovers. But Mr Malik's not so easily beaten and with unorthodox methods and far-flung adventures of his own, he's determined to stay in the game. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

To shy Mr. Malik's dismay one day the handsome, wealthy and oh- so-sure-of-himself Harry Khan shows up for the walk. Khan was a classmate of Mr. Malik, and was his tormentor. It doesn't take long for both men to reveal they will be asking Rose to the social event of the year held by Mr. Malik's club. Other members get involved and create a bird related contest to reduce the two suitor's to one. ( )
