A film about St Francis, very much of its time (early 70s) with Donovan soundtrack and a distinct aie of hippydom. The lead performance by Graham Faulkner is convincing and there is good support although individual actors have relatively little scope for development. Kenneth Cranham perhaps does best as a baddy. Alec Guinness hams it up a bit as the Pope. Some will find it all too syrupy, and although it is visually ravishing it does not match up to Zeffirelli's earlier 'Romeo and Juliet', or his later 'Jesus of Nazareth'. ( ) Focuses on the earlly years of Francis of Assisi, who sought communion with the natural world by renouncing his family's riches to seek his own destiny unencumbered by material possessions. Francis was, in a sense, history's first 'drop-out'; he left a life of comfort to seek a spiritual union with the world. Academy Award-nominated. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
