Blood Royal: The Illustrious House of Hanover, by Christopher Sinclair-Stevenson (read 9 Oct 1995) This is a 1980 book which discusses things about the first four kings of England named George. It is a fluff book, but is based on decent research. It tells of George I incarcerating his wife because of her affair with Philip von Konigsmarck; George II's detestation of his eldest son, Frederick (father of George III); George III's 15 children and his illness; a humorous account of George IV's trip to Scotland in 1821; an account regarding Beau Brummel, who died in 1840; and a chapter on the Pavilion at Brighton, built by George IV's order and apparently still existing. I found this book fun to read, though most non-profound. ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
The four Hanoverian King Georges may have become fixed in history as 'faintly absurd, certainly unattractive, figures' but in this colourful account of their lives and times, families and courts, Christopher Sinclair-Stevenson restores a sprinkling of credit where it has been due. His account does not neglect the marital discords of George I, the towering paternal disdain of George II or the tragically misunderstood 'madness' of George III. But the reader is also encouraged to consider how the Hanoverian monarchs reacted to the climate of art and fashion in their times, from George II's espousal of Handel to George IV's patronage of Beau Brummell. By its own admission not a comprehensive history, Blood Royal is nevertheless an elegant and shining string of linked vignettes and short studies. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
