Who has not felt embarrassed by the actions of their mother at one time or another. In I Am So Embarrassed, the author Robert Munsch was able to establish the reality of the known feeling in the setting of a mall. This public setting leads to the reader being aware of the increased risk of embarrassment. I like how the author uses this story of the familiar feelings that they have when in public with their families to create a connection between children. This connects to the theme of I Am So Embarrassed , which is about the feeling of embarrassment. This theme is found in the commonplace, in the views of a child about the embarrassing actions of a parent. The setting of the mall is one that allows for the culmination of one of the most public place you could get embarrassed at. What some people look at as harmless actions can cause embarrassment in other people lives and embarrassment is a challenging feeling.

Andrew is the main character who is aware of the pervious actions and he does not want to go to the mall with his mother. However, Andrew has no choice but to go with his mother to the mall because he needs new shoes. Andrew has a very special way that he deal with embracement and that usually ends him in a place you would not want to find yourself.

Taylor-Jae was dealing with a similar situation as Andrew because he also had an embarrassing mother at the mall. Andrew would rather go hang out with Taylor-Jae while his mother completes her shopping. However, they are not shielded from the embarrassment because that is when Taylor-Jae’s mother is coming their way.

Andrew’s Mother is one that has made promise after promise to not embarrass her son at the mall. However, these promises seem to fall short as they are entering the mall and she already has embarrassed him. The mother views the actions as nice and not embarrassing like Andrew does which is why she continues to embarrass him.

This realistic fiction picture book allows for the student to connect with the story even with it not being a clear location. This story is one that no matter the time it connects to the reader’s memories and emotions more than a connection to the setting. The reactions and the illustrations were not of a realistic nature as the author’s words were.

Andrew and Taylor-Jae mothers tell their sons to not be so sensitive. However, this sentence would be one they would soon regret. Andrew and Taylor-Jae give a little twist to their mothers’ day at the mall and if you want to hear it you will need to read I Am So Embarrassed. I hope you will enjoy the comedic twist that is applied to the common feeling of embarrassment.
