Surprising, because people talked of her as a low savage. She is a very definite personality, self-contained, natural, giving an impression of beauty and brilliance. I can only reproach her for not dancing enough and compromising too much with the "music hall" expectations—wearing feathers, mere hopping and parading. What was most distinctive about Josephine Baker was her walk and the beauty of her legs.
