The science behind hurricanes and wind patterns are complicated (in my opinion), so I feel like this book would be good to read in chunks. If all of it was read in one sitting, the students might not get everything out of it. I felt like there was a lot of information that was very useful but could be split up. I really liked the illustrations. I love watercolor, so having that in an information book was really cool. I'm used to seeing photographs in information books but I like the incorporation of watercolor. ( )

With the devastation brought about by recent hurricanes, this is the perfect time to read (or reread) this book. It's packed with information but presented in a way that will reassure children, not scare them. For instance, if there's a hurricane watch, children can help by bringing in their bikes so they won't blow away. Preparing is key and giving children something concrete to do works magic in keeping them calm. There are also science experiments to try so they can learn even more about hurricanes. I recommend it for both school and home, elementary grades. ( )

Overall: This book is all about hurricanes. Topics include how hurricanes are formed, how they are measured/tracked, how to be prepared during a hurricane, and how the path of a hurricane transforms during its route. It also had fun additional facts on a few pages and contains a page detailing specific activities to learn more.

Uses/strategies:
-This book could be used to show the purpose of diagrams and how they enhance the learning. Without diagrams, for example, about how hurricanes
are formed, it would be harder to visualize the process.
-This book could also be used to teach the purpose of a glossary. All the bolded words are included in the glossary and provide a quick reference to
information just read.

Possible science topics:
-weather/natural disasters/hurricanes

Informational text features:
-bolded words
-glossary
-diagrams/charts
-"Did You Know" additional information

This book explains hurricanes to the reader. The author includes information on how hurricanes are created, when they normally form, what happens before a hurricane hits land, and what happens as it is making landfall. The illustrations give the reader a realistic look at hurricanes throughout the book. The author included a glossary so the reader can read hurricane specific vocabulary they may not know. The format used by the author lets the reader easily learn about hurricanes. This is a great read for elementary age children since they are curious and enjoy nonfiction books.
The author included an activity and websites to visit at the end of the book for the reader to find out more about hurricanes.
The back flap includes short biographies on the author and illustrator. The book did not include a bibliography for readers to see the source(s) of information for the book. ( )
