This humorous tale is about a little girl who is looking for a Valentine for Valentine’s Day! As we follow her around on her journey to the mailbox to deliver a letter to her Grandfather (her chosen Valentine), her world becomes just a little more vivid and brought to life for the reader. The book is also interactive through its numerous and creative pop-ups throughout the book. Although the main character, Margery, became very angry at the thought of not getting a letter in return from her Grandfather on this very special Holiday, she learns in the end that patience is key. The moral of this story is to remember to always have patience- even when it’s really hard to wait for something you really want. ( )

In my opinion this was a really great book for young children who are just beginning to read. This in an interactive or "life-the-flap" book that lets readers uncover hidden text or illustrations throughout the book. The story is about a young bunny named Margery who wants a valentine and decides to send her grandpa a valentine through the mail. She waits and waits and gets upset when she doesn't get anything in the mail from her grandpa after a few days. She eventually receives a heart shaped box of cookies from her grandpa and is happy again. The first thing that I really liked about this book was illustrations and physical make-up of the books. "Lift-the-flap" is the strategy that this book uses to engage it's young readers while reading. For example, on the first page the text reads, "Margery went to the mailbox. She opened it and looked inside." then the reader is required to lift the flap of the mailbox and read the text "It was empty!" The next thing that I liked was how related the main character was. I'm sure all children have had the desire to want a valentine at a young age and just wanted someone else (like a family member) to want to be their valentine. Finally, I think this book pushes it's young readers to think about patience. Good things usually come to those who wait! ( )

I enjoyed this book for two reasons. The first reason that I liked this book is because it is a flip-the-flap story. On each page it has a flap that the reader can lift to see what is under it. This aspect made the book engaging and fun. I also liked how the book asked the readers questions. This feature also made the book more engaging because the reader could answer the question and then book told the reader the correct answer. For example, the book asks "What's Margery doing?" and the next line is "She's mailing her letter." The message of this story is to tell the story of a little bunny named Margery that learns how to send a Valentine. ( )

In my opinion this is a great book for young readers. The purpose of the book is to emphasize the importance of patience. This can be seen when Margery eagerly awaits a Valentine from her grandfather, but must remain patient when it doesn’t arrive right away. The books greatest quality is its illustrations. Ziefert utilizes very bright, warm colors to attract the reader’s attention to make it feel more inviting. What I think attracts young readers the most is how the “Lift-the-flap Story” utilizes the flaps amid the illustrations. For example, a line of text reads “ The next day Margery raced to her mailbox. She was sure she would find a letter.” At this point the young reader locates the mailbox on the page and lifts it up to find that “…it was empty!” I believe this immersion with the text gets young readers to start analyzing illustrations at an early age, which will make them better readers in the future. Overall, this is a fun little book that children and adults will enjoy reading together. ( )

This book presents the holiday of Valentines Day and the enjoyment of receiving a Valentines Day letter in the mail. The book was very clear, organized and an enjoyable read, which concludes why I really liked the book. The first reason I really liked this book was because of the illustrations, they were so amazing and fun. Each page had a lift-the-flap illustration, which enhanced the story as lifting the flap added suspense and kept you thinking of what was underneath the flap. For example, there was a heart that you had to lift up on one of the pages and it was a Valentine’s Day letter Margery (the main character) sent to her Grandpa. Next, I really enjoyed the characters in this booked that were played by bunnies. Margery, the main character, was believable and well developed. Through the character’s played in the book it really captured the feeling of going to the mailbox on Valentines Day and the excitement that it brings. Margery looked and looked in the mail each day before Valentines Day and when nothing was there she got frustrated. Her Mother taught her that it’s important to be patient and "If you send a valentine, you'll receive one". Margery was so happy when she finally went to the mailbox and received a heart filled with cookies and a letter from her Grandfather. The main idea of this story is the excitement of receiving a letter in the mail on Valentines Day and that a family member will always be there for you on this day.
