Preschoolers and kids up to the first grade will enjoy learning fundamentals of addition and subtraction with help from the big, colorful construction machine illustrations that fill the pages of this picture book. First comes a bulldozer, soon joined by a giant wheel loader. Two machines become three with the arrival of a backhoe loader . . . and three becomes four when a dump truck shows up. Before long, there are ten giant work vehicles at the building site. But as each machine's work is done for the day, it leaves the area. And one page at a time, the number of vehicles is reduced by subtraction. This brightly illustrated introduction to addition and subtraction has heavy card stock pages, with each page stepped in size. For adding numbers 1 through 10, succeeding pages are about a half-inch wider than the one before it. Working back and subtracting from 10, the book's remaining pages are successively a half-inch less wide. As kids turn pages and see a big, bright building machine's illustration on each of them, they learn to add and subtract while they are learning about construction vehicles. (Ages 3-6)… (meer)

This book is about a construction site that starts off with one construction machine and adds a new machine on each page until the total comes to ten. Once the number of construction machines totals ten, then one construction machine leaves the construction site until none are left. This book also contains colorful illustrations and many little details that are hidden in the illustrations.

My son loves this book, in fact, my husband or I have to read this book every night before bedtime to him. He loves the fact that it talks about the different construction machines, the varied page length, and all the little details on the pages. I like the fact that it is helping him learn his numbers and simple addition and subtraction facts.

I think this book would be great in the classroom for students who are learning their numbers one through ten and addition/subtraction facts one through ten. A good extension idea would be for each child to pick their favorite construction machine, draw it on a piece of paper and write a short sentence or two about why that is their favorite. Another idea would be to have magazines available with these types of machines in it for the students to cut out their favorites and make a collage with them. A final idea would be for the class to use pictures of these construction machines to cut out and put on a class storyboard and write the addition/subtraction facts that go along with them. ( )
