The classic Hansel and Gretel story, full of warning and courage as the children survive the abandonment of their caregivers and escape the clutches of a child-eating witch using their own wits. The illustrations are a beautiful block styling with large expanses of solid color. Details are thin lined and use traditional looking motifs which evoke an imagined landscape somewhere in Germany.

Hansel and Gretel live with their father and stepmother, but the stepmother wants to get rid of them, becausse they cannot afford food. She tries multiple times to get rid of them, but they keep coming back. They end up getting lost in the woods, and find a house made of cake and sugar. The witch who lives there kidnaps them and tries to eat them. They trick the witch into getting into the oven and she dies. When they get home, the stepmother died from eating a poisonous mushroom, and the father is delighted to see them. This is a good book to teach fiction, because nothing in that story would actually happen. ( )

Illustrations: pencil and watercolor. A father of a little boy and little girl became ill and their stepmother convinced him to kick them out of the house because they were eating too much food. The father and stepmother took the children into the woods and left them overnight. Hansel had left bread crumbs in a trail behind them so that they knew their way back home, but when they woke up to go home, the bread crumbs were gone. While trying to find their home, the two kids stumbled upon a house that was made out of candy. An old woman saw the kids and opened the door and invited them inside. The woman fed the kids and put them to bed and when they were asleep, she put them both in cages. She planned on plumping up the little boy first to eat, but Gretel tricked the witch and eventually pushed her in the fire. They escaped the house and returned home. This book is considered a folktale because it is an old story, retold by the author. It has been passed down both orally and through written text for many years. Genre: folklore, Age Appropriateness: Intermediate

This book is about two siblings, Hansel and Gretel who lived deep in the woods with an ill father and a wicker step-mother. When resources become low the step-mother feels that it is best to abandon the children in the woods, due to the father’s weak condition he agrees. After many attempts to return home the two children find what they think to be a nice elderly lady to take them in, the where soon to learn this wasn’t the case. They end up realizing they had stumbled upon a cannibalistic witch who planned to fatten them up for dinner. After a rough period they manage to escape and return to their father and in their surprise the wicked step-mother had passed away, thus leaving the family to live happily ever after.
I personally have heard this story told in many different renditions. I personally am not a fan of this book due to its slightly graphic concept but as a child my main thoughts where the house made of candy.
I think one of the things that would stand out in children in the age range in which I hope to teach would be the house made of candy. I think this would be a good means to introduce the five sense. Once you had read the book to the class this would be a good time to discuss the different senses and how they are used. Then you could instruct them to describe what they think a house of candy would be like using the five different sense. I also think this could be a good way to teach following directions such as building a gingerbread house following steps.

I liked this book for two reasons. First, I liked the characters of the story. I loved how Hansel was a good big brother and took care of his little sister, Gretel. He was brave and smart and encouraged Gretel to be brave too. For example, when Hansel was trapped in the cage that the witch put him in and Gretel was cooking for the witch, he encouraged her to be brave and be clever and because of this, Gretel was able to trick the witch into going in the oven where the fire was ready (for the witch was prepared to eat Gretel). She slammed the door shut and was able to go and rescue Hansel.

Second, I liked the plot of the book. I love fairy tales and this book has the classic fairy tale plot. The book was suspenseful at times like when the children had been taken to the woods for the second time and couldn't find their way back home, and when the witch was preparing to eat Gretel. But thankfully, they managed to escape and the children could go live with their father happily.

I would say that the message of this book is to be courageous in troubled times. The children were very brave and clever children and they protected each other and never gave up. ( )

It has been said that guardian spirits watch over and protect small children, and that may be so.  But there are also stories of children who find the courage to protect themselves.  Such is the story of Hansel and Gretel.
