GKC trying to square the circle: to reconcile his affection for the Middle Ages (which he idealised a lot) and his affection for the working class and 'ordinary' people (whom he idealised a bit) - and surprisingly more or less succeeding. (While of course, in his own inimitable penetrating style, touching in passing upon several other subjects.) One of his best works. ( )
