Fiction. Literature. The Way We Were is one of more than twenty-five books in the series Tales from Grace Chapel Inn, a series about memories, the bonds of sisterhood, the blessings of friendship, and the many fascinating people we meet along the way. When Jane's college roommates gather for a reunion at Grace Chapel Inn, time seems to disappear. When the four women last met, they were young and idealistic, but in the twenty-five years since they graduated, their lives have taken different turns, and the decisions they've made and who they've become test the strength of their bond. As they reconnect, they uncover old wounds and confess long-buried secrets, and soon it looks like their time together just might turn into a disaster. But when Sylvia Songer stops by, the weekend turns into an impromptu quilting retreat that brings healing and encouragement, and reminds the women of the blessing of old friends. Meanwhile, Alice cares for a patient suffering from amnesia, and the only clue to her identity is the dog who was watching over her after her car went off the road. As Alice tries to help this woman recover her life, Louise counsels a guest whose marriage is on the rocks by sharing about the hard times in her own marriage. Can she help the young woman give it one more try? As the Howard sisters look back on the past, their time together gives all of them hope for the days to come.… (meer)

The Way We Were is book 42 in the Tales From Grace Chapel Inn series about three sisters who run a bed-and-breakfast from their maternal ancestors' Victorian house in the village of Acorn Hill, Pennsylvania. Their late father, Daniel Howard, had been the pastor of nearby Grace Chapel, hence the name.

Widowed Mrs. Louise Howard Smith teaches piano as well as keeping the inn's books. Alice Howard is a part-time nurse. Divorced Jane Howard was a professional chef in San Francisco. She does the cooking and gardening. They share in housekeeping tasks.

These books have a formula: there will be a main problem and one or more problems for subplots. Guests and/or townspeople will be involved. Faith will play a part in resolving the problems.

The main plot is a reunion, held at the inn, between Jane and her college roommates: Stella, Patty, and Becky. Each of the old friends has something on her mind, but they manage to enjoy themselves anyway.

Subplots:

a. Alice has a patient with amnesia. They're calling her Mary. She was found with no identification. She starts to remember little things, but not what she wants to know most -- who she is.

b. Postmistress Alma Streeter has an emergency in her family. The sisters' Aunt Ethel and her friend, the often-obnoxious Florence Simpson, befriend the substitute postmistress. Unfortunately, LeAnn is more chatty about the mail than Alma, and she's chatting with Acorn Hill's champion gossips...

c. Inn guest Claire Jenkins is having problems at home. She seems sweet, but a tad spoiled, so is she the real problem?

NOTE:

Chapter 10: No, pride goes before destruction. It's a haughty spirit that goes before a fall. See Proverbs 16:18.

I enjoyed hearing about Jane's college days and what her roommates believed about themselves and each other before they find out the truth. Claire Jenkins' story is a good cautionary tale for young couples. Mary's story is a nice little mystery. What Ethel and Florence assumed from tidbits LeAnn gave them versus the truth was amusing.

The recipe this time is Paper Bag Apple Pie.

Cat lovers: Wendell, the Howards' big gray tabby, does put in an appearance or three.

Dog lovers: Enjoy heroic Irish Setter Finn. ( )
