Arguably Ibsen's three greatest plays (or at least his three most successful in the long-term) fill the second of Meyer's six volume translation. As with the first volume, Meyer's intelligent notes and introduction provide a sympathetic understanding of how the plays worked in the 19th century, and of Ibsen's personal connections to his works. Yet, proactively, his up-to-date translation makes the plays vital to our era. Great stuff. ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

Hedda Gabler (1890) is now one of his most popular plays, but greeted at first with bewilderment and outrage (''The play is simply a bad escape of moral sewage-gas'' Pictorial World). Also included is An Enemy of the People (1883), whose central character was the actor Konstantin Stanislavski''s favourite role. Michael Meyer''s translations are ''crisp and cobweb-free, purged of verbal Victoriana'' (Kenneth Tynan)' Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
