This book can be read as a standalone as that is what I did. I read the entire thing and only saw that it was book 2 when I went online to do my review. My thought is that if I had read the first book I might have rated this one higher. It's a moot point now. This is a short young adult book with the classic triangle of love between the life of good and the life of bad. A day-to-day struggle for everyone but pushed up a notch with vampires and angels. Eternal introduces us to the extensive world of vampires and other supernatural creatures that live along side the human world including werewolves, werebears, guardian angels, and others. Miranda felt like a failure in the human world but when she is transformed into a vampire she finds that she is a princess in the eternal world. The man who transformed Miranda is Archibald Mosby Radford, King of the Mantle of Dracul and the leader of the Eternals' aristocracy. The story is told in alternating chapters between Miranda and Zachary, her fallen guardian angel. Zachary becomes human after he shows himself to Miranda when she was attacked and comes to work for her as a personal assistant – all Eternals have beautiful, human personal assistants. Even though he lost his wings, Zachary is still trying to save Miranda from the increasingly powerful and erratic Master and redeem himself. Father, as Miranda calls the Master, is dabbling in unstable magic and is becoming more dangerous and unpredictable as he plans a big Death Day gala where something spectacular will happen. The character development is strong and tension and excitement builds to the denouement of the book. A slightly different take on the vampire craze in books. ( )

I met the author at a library convention and immediately fell in love with her great young adult books. Later I had the privilege of working with her on The Spirit of Texas projects, Highly recommended.
