This is a good but but I am finding books from an "oral" perspective are not my forte. I am having similar issues with Rant by Chuck P. ...can't put my finger on it... ( )

I've been aware of this book for quite a while but I really didn't feel like it would be the kind of thing for me. I'm a fan of zombie movies like 28 Days Later but I haven't read any zombie books. However, I kept hearing good things about this book and then I saw that Hollywood decided to turn it into a movie. I have a general rule that I won't watch a movie based on a book until I have read the book. People I know think that this is insane but I'm sure most of you share my feelings. The final thing that made me decide to read this book was that I noticed people on this forum were giving it positive reviews. I have found that since I have been a member of this forum, books which get consistent praise are worth a read.

Within the first few pages I realised two things. Firstly this isn't written like a normal work of fiction and secondly I would enjoy it. There are no central characters and not plot to speak of, the book is a collection of interviews with the people who survived the zombie apocalypse. Over the course of the book these interviews give a history of how the earth reacted to the zombie problem, what it did to us and finally how the war was won. Quite frankly, this is genius and I absolutely loved the fact that the book had been written in this way.

On the face of it, this is a very entertaining book but I couldn't help but feel that Brooks was holding a mirror up to some of the best and worst the human race has to offer as well. There are the usual casualties of war, the abandonment of people who could have been rescued and nations only out for themselves. Current political issues are looked at and yet at no point does the book feel preachy. There are interviews with commander who obviously feel they made the right decision even if morally it is questionable. There are those broken by war and there are the usual war crazed macho nutters.

I really enjoyed this book and I know the movie won't stick to it, (how could it) or do it justice but that's fine, they rarely do. If you have been putting off reading this book so far, do yourself a favour and give it a go, it might surprise you. ( )

I try to express only my most honest opinion in a spoiler-free way. Unfortunately, there is still always a risk of slight spoilers despite my best efforts. If you feel something in my review is a spoiler please let me know. Thank you.

So I know this is an unpopular opinion, but this book was highly boring. I just couldn't pay attention at all. The ONLY good thing about this book is that I got to listen to Alan Alda on the audiobook. And even that wasn't for very long. Maybe if he did the whole book. Honestly I think I'd be fine with listening to that man read a phonebook.

I see what the author was trying to do here. And it was a really different and original approach to a very done topic, but I didn't like it. Even with the audiobook, and a full cast, and Alan Alda. It just wasn't my cup of tea I guess. ( )

A story told through an intermitable series of interview vignettes. Not a good format, for me anyway. No chance to develop any characters. I only enjoyed three: downed pilot, rogue submarine, and the guy climbing down terraces of a high rise to escape zombies. ( )

I picked this up mostly because I had just been hearing good things about it in various spots, but I was very surprised as how engrossing it becomes while you are reading it. The thing not to forget when you read it is that it is not narrative in the traditional sense, but narrative from different individual standpoints and so the stories that are being told generally are very personal for the most part, even when characters are discussing large scale issues. That is largely what makes the book successful as well as scarier than anticipated. You feel the fear of individual people as they tell their stories, and you feel their loss as well. There are certainly some stones left unturned in the collective narrative, and I suspect that leaves the book wide open for a volume II, which I would look forward to.

The apocalyptic feel is really where the book succeeds, even though going into the book you know it's the tale of people who survived and won the war, but the pale shade of gray that starts slowly and then blossoms into full scale calamitous plague disaster makes you feel sad and scared and helpless. Moreover, it has the weird affect of making you start to really think about "Ok, so, how will, uh would I deal with this?" ( )
