A friendly warm-up to the Book of Thoth. A blend survey of Crowley's writing, Golden Dawn, Kabbalah which better help the novice user of the Thoth Tarot decode it's rich esotericism and divergences from other Tarot decks. Best recommendation is get the cards. ( )

This is an ok intro to Crowley's deck, less obfuscation than in Weird Uncle Al's book, but not much elucidation. I was disappointed in its lack of clarification and revelatory info. Definitely not the authoritative examination its title claims to be. Nice to hear so much more about Frieda Harris, the artist. ( )

As much as I am fond of some of the author's other books, I'm afraid I found this one disappointing. It reads like a rough draft that could have turned into a good book with another year's work. True, there is some interesting information about the genesis of the Thoth deck. But the discussions of the individual cards add no new insights and are mostly watered down from Crowley's own more engaging Book of Thoth. DuQuette's discussion of the court cards is especially silly. He tries to turn them into a kind of pop astrology, listing names of celebrities whose sun signs correspond to the different court cards, with no discussion of how this should illuminate our understanding of the card. Sadly, this book is a poor effort from a writer who has much more to offer. ( )
