Really cute book that even covers shapes and colors while wishing a happy birthday... I think my nephew will love it. ( ) Mickey knows that it is someone's birthday, but he can't remember whose. He therefore walks around and chooses a present for each of his friends, from Minnie to Pluto, and the reader helps him locate the gifts by lifting the flaps. Each time he enters a store and looks for the present, the reader is asked to use a skill to help Mickey, such as identifying a color or counting a set of items. Eventually, Mickey makes it to the party at the clubhouse and learns that it is not Minnie's birthday, or Donald's or Daisy's or Goofy's, or even Pluto's - it is a party for Mickey's own birthday. The story is a bit silly - how can a person not remember that it is there own birthday? The logic of the narrative is sacrificed for a surprise ending. However, most kids won't realize there is anything amiss with the premise. They'll enjoy the birthday topic, and the familiar characters from Mickey's Clubhouse. Because if you buy this book, it is due to the fact that it features Mickey Mouse. My girls loves their Mickey. Often, when a book is released with a movie or cartoon tie-in, the execution is questionable; publishers count on a child's love with the well-known characters to sell the book, not the merits of the book itself. I see that principle in effect here, with the story that is only mediocre, but that flaw aside, the rest of the book is nice little package. The illustrations are in keeping with the cartoon, bright and festive, with the crisp look of computer graphics but the still the traditional feel of hand-drawn illustrations. The intentional inclusion of learning objectives, basic though they may be, is a nice addition. Most importantly, I know that both my girls will sit patiently and read the book with me, because the book is interactive and it is about Mickey Mouse. I'm willing to buy this type of book if it furthers my daughters' love of reading. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

Happy Birthday! Today is somebody's birthday, but Mickey can't figure out whose it is. Could it be Daisy's? Perhaps he should get her a new hair bow. Maybe it's Pluto's, and Mickey can get him a bone. Young readers will have great fun following Mickey on a birthday-themed treasure hunt, peeking below the book's lift-the-flaps to uncover clues. Happy Birthday! introduces math concepts such as size-order, patterns, and counting, while inviting children to put their imagination and reasoning skills to the test as they follow Mickey on his quest to find the perfect present for the mysterious birthday party.
