I haven’t read a book by Robert Cormier in a while but I enjoyed this one. The story was suspenseful enough to keep me reading although I could put it down. Although the plot kept me guessing it didn’t quite have the “OMG – I have to find out what is going to happen” effect. ( ) Years after his father kills 22 kids while driving, Denny's family begins receiving phone calls in the middle of the night during the month of October. Denny's family ends up moving alot to escape everything that has happened. While everything is going on, Denny is not allowed to answer the phone. One night Denny secretly picks up the phone and wonders what will happen next. Denny Colbert‘s father was killed on Halloween night by a collapsing balcony in the movie theater. Twenty four years later harassing phone calls come day and night. Denny, however has been told not to answer the phone but is home alone one day, the phone keeps ringing and decides to answer. Denny finds himself caught in a jam between the mysterious caller, a newspaper reporter and a pretty girl named Chloe. The main character, Danny Cobler, almost loses his life trying to find out who a mysterious midnight callers is disturbing his father's sleep and his because of the tragedy his father was involved in 25 years earlier. The experience teaches Danny to appreciate his father, and to respect his decisions. He truly realizes how precious life can be. Young readers will like the mystrious part, but also the uncertainties, inner turmoils, insecurities and struggles Danny goes through, as they are typical for a lot of kids of his age.
