Autobiography This is a powerful story of how a life of horrific abuse can sometimes lead to decisions being made that will affect the rest of a person's life. As I read this book I felt a great deal of sympathy for Yvonne, who rightfully should have been raised in a nurturing home but instead was raised with violence, neglect, and abuse. I liked that Yvonne's journal was part of this book, and that the way she writes and speaks is so accurately presented. I have read other reviews (not on LT) that found this to be disconcerting and hard to follow, but I didn't find that to be true. Yvonne is honest and forthright about what happened, not only as a child and young woman, but also about what happened on the night the tragedy (murder) occured. However, to me the ultimate tragedy is that she herself is a victim; had she been raised in a nurturing environment, this story need never have been written. I came away from this book with admiration for Yvonne, who had the courage to tell her story no matter how ugly it got. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
This is a chronicle of justice & injustice, the true story of the events that put Yvonne Johnson behind bars for life at the age of twenty-seven for the murder of an alleged child abuser. Above all, it is the unforgettable story of a Native woman who has broken a lifetime of silence to share the understandings that sustain her. Written with the compassion that is the hallmark of Rudy Wiebe's work, & informed by Yvonne Johnson's own intelligence & poetic eloquence, this award-winning book unites one of Canada's foremost writers & the great-great-granddaughter of Chief Big Bear in a collaboration that speaks to us all. "So rich ...I couldn't put it down. The central miracle of the book is in the relationship between Wiebe, a distinguished novelist, & Johnson, a woman whose spirit & creativity belie the unimaginably grim events of her life. They find each other in the underworld of Johnson's life story, & emerge with a book that is an act of redemption." --Ann-Marie MacDonald, author of Fall on Your Knees "A must read...One of the best non-fiction books of the year."--Ottawa Sun "Stolen Life is a gift of understanding...A compelling story infused with hope & spirituality." --Financial Post "[Stolen Life is] about the humbling & unyielding power of forgiveness ...told as poignantly as Frank McCourt tells his story in Angela's Ashes." --Georgia Straight.
