En passant verschijnen helden als Pascal, Fermat, Bernouilli, Gauss, Von Neumann, Keynes, Black, Scholes op het toneel, maar ook minder bekende personages als Cordano.
Bernstein heeft het allemaal verweven tot een geschiedenis, zonder zich te verliezen in wiskunde. Het wordt allemaal in heldere taal uitgelegd en toch is dit boek niet makkelijk om door te ploegen. Het enige wat Bernstein te 'verwijten' valt is dat de tijd sinds het verschijnen van het boek niet stil heeft gestaan. Ik kijk uit naar een vervolg waar ook de huidige bancaire crisis wordt beschreven vanuit risico management hoek. (
