Harold Pinter's first and only novel, written in the early 1950s before he began writing plays. The novel is set in post-war London's East End, a landscape of bomb-sites, and describes the lives of four young Londoners whose energy and humour lift them above the routine austerity of the time.

Harold Pintér is a really good drama writer. So it's surprising that his novel is simply bad. Some says it would be a great drama and maybe it's true but unfortunately it is a novel. Incoherent, diffluent dialogues, dull storyline going towards nothing.... It was really hard to read it till the end. ( )
