Why, why why? Yes, I got to buy this gem for only a quarter, but really, I would be happier if the library kept making the book available to everyone. This is a lovely book - a true story, too - and Godden's delicious writing and clever insights make it the perfect bedtime reading. Rumer Godden has not written a bad book...and this one is yet another wonderful jewel! The Dark Horse takes place in Calcutta India, in the horse-racing circle of characters...trainer, owner, stable manager...and convent of nuns who feed the poor. You can't help but think, did Miss Godden (who died in 1998, age 90), who'd lived years in India pre-partition, and always had a great love and fondness for the people and country, know Mother Theresa and her Missionaries of Charity? Now in my 60s, I only discovered this title this year. While it may, like many of her books, be marketed towards the YA crowd, be prepared to enjoy it, no matter your age. (
