This is an excellent introductory textbook, both well-written and covering a wide range of topics appropriate for an introductory linguistics course-- more than can probably be covered in a survey course, in fact. I've also had experience with Ohio State's Language Files intro textbook, and I found this book both explanatorily and stylistically better, with better practice exercises as well. Finally, the existence of a Canadian edition of this textbook is a wonderful thing, given the market generally trends either American or British, and Canadian English of course is neither.
