Walter Savitch received his Ph.D. degree in Mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1969. Since that time he has been on the faculty at the University of California at San Diego and is currently a Professor of Computer Science and director of the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Cognitive Science. Professor Savitch's research areas include complexity theory, formal language theory, computational linguistics, and the development of computer science education materials. In addition to writing numerous research articles and involvement in other editorial projects, he has written a number of well-known computer science textbooks, including Pascal, Ada, and C++ CS1 and CS2 textbooks. Contributing author, Kenrick Mock, is an Associate Professor at the University of Alaska-Anchorage. He has also taught at Washington State University, Portland State University, and the University of California-Davis. He teaches undergraduate computer science courses across the curriculum including introductory C++, Java™, Visual Basic® for non-programmers, algorithms, computer security, and artificial intelligence. With the Coastal Marine Institute at UAA, he helped develop a computer system to aid in research about Alaska sea ice and the atmosphere. Before becoming a teacher, Mock was a research scientist and software engineer at Intel™. He received a PhD in computer science from UC Davis.… (meer)

Cosa dire di Edgar Allan Poe che non sia stato già detto? Nulla, quindi mi limito a scrivere qualche mia breve impressione: il terrore è tutto interiore, nessuno come lui sa scandagliare gli abissi dell'animo umano per tirarne fuori le paure più ancestrali. Sepolte vive, possesioni demoniache, morti risorti: sta davvero accadendo o è tutto nella mente del narratore? Ogni racconto è costantemente sospeso tra sogno e realtà, anche la scelta di non fornire mai troppi particolari di contorno contribuisce a creare un'atmosfera vaga e quasi onirica.
Non solo è stato l'iniziatore della letteratura dell'orrore, ma ancora oggi rimane uno dei suoi più grandi esponenti. ( )

Appena finite le medie, mio zio Vittorio decise che ero diventata abbastanza grande da leggere “libri seri”.
Il primo “libro serio” che mi diede da leggere furono i racconti di Edgar Allan Poe.
Erano periodi diversi da quelli che stiamo vivendo, avevamo meno stimoli e di conseguenza eravamo più facili alle suggestioni.
Ricordo nottate passate a leggere, ed altre, meno piacevoli, passate in bianco a scrutare nella penombra con la convinzione di vedere il sudario di lady Madeleine Usher sventolare ai piedi del mio letto.
Risale a quel periodo la mia paura del buio, paura che mi porto dietro ancora oggi!
Nonostante tutto ciò io non posso che ringraziare mio zio per le sue scelte decisamente audaci.
Quel libro è sempre vicino al mio letto e in perenne lettura.
Ci sono passaggi nei racconti di Poe che sono momenti di assoluta poesia e che anche dopo più letture comunque riescono a dare emozioni forti, ma è questo che deve fare tutto ciò che è arte. ( )
