I liked certain things about this book, but there were also things that raised concerned. The main concept of this book is to teach young readers about the alphabet. One reason I liked this book is because of the large print words with big pictures. For young children, the pictures are very important for comprehension. On each page, there is an animal that takes up the whole page, except for the both piece that has the letter and description of the animal. For example, the R page contains an illustration of a rat and the description says "rat with a bat." The combination of letter, description, and image is great. A reason I didn't like this book much is although it utilizes rhyme, the necessity of rhyme led to the writer to occasionally use terms not level appropriate for young children. For instance, the B page says, "bear in despair." Many young children would not know what the word "despair" means. For that reason, it may not always the book may not always be effective.
