I’m a big fan of poetry, and Jack Prelutsky’s book “Rolling Harvey Down the Hill” certainly didn’t disappoint. The thing I like best about this book is the style of poetry it is written in. I’m a big fan of rhyming, Limerick like poems, and although these poems weren’t technically limericks, they had the same style and feel. Another thing I liked about this book was that the poems were distinct, yet all part of the same storyline. The entire book is about a group of friends, and each poem told a different story about a member of the friend group. One thing I was surprised at, however, was that one of the poems was about smoking. The group of friends stole some cigarettes and smoked them in the school bathroom. Although it expressed a negative opinion of smoking at the end, I was surprised that it would be referenced at all in a children’s book. This book was written in 1993, so by that point smoking should definitely have been looked at in a more negative light. The book did a good job overall, however, at expressing its main idea – memories with our childhood friends are some of the best that we will ever have.
