This story, number five in Goldy, the caterer series, features lowfat recipes, Goldy's assistant Julian, her new husband Detective Tom, Marla's heart attack, a blue rose and hemlock. I find the characters quite entertaining with some real life events, not just recipes and a mystery in the mix. I didn't enjoy her laughing off the prerogative of her new husband sabotaging her catering event. In other stories in the series he's more of a help than a hindrance. Enjoyable read. Goldie Schultz, caterer was trying to figure out a low-fat menu fo a new client. She was to cater an event for the Mignon cosmetics kickoff for new line of makeup. Julian, who boarded at Goldie’s home as well as a chef in training, was dating Mignon’s best sales clerk. That same day Goldie had to do a food fair at the mall. It was also 4th of July weekend, with a large party to cater. Goldie needed help. Julian was more interested in being with Claire. Nevertheless Goldie managed to get the low-fat food prepared and to the mall. While at the mall, Claire was killed by a hit and run. When Goldie got home she was greeted by The Jerk, her ex husband. He told her that Marla, Goldie’s best friend had had a heart attack. Goldie was stressed out between Marla in the hospital and Julian grieving over Claire. Something odd was going on at Mignon Cosmetics. Cooking, chaos, death and poison made life crazy. Goldie’s new husband, Detective Tom Schultz, was being kept very busy at work. Goldie had to figure out what was going on while trying to care for everybody but herself. It was an ok read. There was way too much unnecessary detail written in. The dialog was rather stilted. The action was slow and methodical. It wasn’t awful, just simply a so-so read. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

This book has all the makings of a traditional murder mystery: a spunky main character, recipes from Goldy's menus, lots of makeup and complicated love lives. I enjoyed it until the last chapters. First there was a lot of repetition (there were definitely a lot of characters weaving in and out of the story), then the plot veered to more and more outlandish situations, until the end which was downright farcical. I don't mind humour in my thrillers, but this book went next level ridiculous and I just lost interest.
A good way to spend a Sunday afternoon, but I won't be reading more from this author. ( )
