Too bad, Clark had some good, terrifying images and this is otherwise exactly my kind of horror novel. ( ) I came into this book with high expectations, but I was sorely disappointed in some areas. The Tower is a good book, don't get me wrong, but that's all it is: Good. It's nothing extraordinary or amazing, but it's a good enough yarn to supply some fun, although it has a rather slow start. A band has managed to stay inside of an old home called The Tower in order to practice their music away from the world, but what they don't know is that the house has a past more terrifying than they could imagine, and that they are its next victim. The main characters are forced to deal with visions of their own demise, while also figuring out the house's history and its present allies, who are trying to kill them off one by one to give the house more power. Nothing spectacular, but still a good read. Not Clark's best, but a fair entry in the haunted house genre. The necessity of having victims to throw into the grinder means that the early victims are flat and uninspired. The dynamics of personalities within a band had a lot of potential, but was reduced to a one-track annoyance of the band leader's egotism. In all, it felt like a near-miss. Clark's near-misses are better than many of the books from other authors I've read on the Leisure Books line. A newly formed band agrees to housesit a remote Yorkshire house while getting their music together for a recording session. It does not take long before the musicians start having nightmares in which they die. The dreams are so real that they awake surprised to still be alive. Slowly, they realize that it is only a matter of time before the dreams become real. Now the task is to escape a house that really, really wants them to stay. I liked this book. It was scary but not too graphic. I think the characters were well done and not just cookie cutter horror story characters. I would have liked more backstory on the house and there were some loose ends that I would have liked tied up. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
