This book is based off the story of a Aladdin from One Hundred and One Arabian nights. It was set near china and the illistrations reminded me of egypt or Iraq. A great story! A retelling of Aladdin and the wonderful lamp from the Arabian Nights. This classic tale is retold by Eric A. Kimmel. It opens with an author's note expressing the concern of the authenticity of this tale. I enjoyed this tale of Aladdin as the only story of Aladdin I have ever been introduced to is Disney's movie and I'm sure many Western culture can relate. This version allows the readers to learn that this is an old Arabian tale that date back centuries. I liked the cultural terminology used such as bazaar and sultan. The technique used for creating the illustrations are vey unique. Aladdin meets a magician who claims to be his uncle. He lures him to a cavern many miles from his home, a leaves him there trapped underground with the dijinn, or genie. Aladdin frees himself with the help of the dijinn, and he gets back home to his mother. He decides he wants to marry the Sultan's daughter, and asks to be allowed to build her a palace. Once the palace is built, the magician returns and has the dijinn pick it up and place it far away in the African desert. Aladdin finds his new wife, and their palace far from home, and agrees to follow the princesses plan to get it back where it belongs. She tricks the magician into thinking they will be friends, and has the dijinn bring the palace back and leave the sneaky magician right where he is. The author wrote a version of the popular folklore Aladdin. The story has been changed many times. I liked this version of the story. This story shows to always appreciate what you have and to make the best of it. This book also gave me a new view and more knowledge of the story of Aladdin. One big difference I see is that the princess' name is not Jasmine in the book. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
