I really liked Grazer's "Maneater" and "The Starter Wife" but her first novel focuses on a darker, more gritty side of LA. Other than the saintly Gabe (who could come rescue me any time), I wouldn't trust these characters, or want to meet them in a dark alley. (

This is my absolute favorite book. I have no idea what that says about me - but I love this book. This is a harsh romance and a fast read. (

I absolutely loved this book! It was the first one I read by Grazer (and I believe the first one she wrote) and it seems to be the best.

Sorry, Grazer, it's all downhill from here. (

Screenwriter Grazer's entertaining tale begins in 1995 in yuppie suburban California, where Amanda is married to James, has two children, and has killed her brother. The scene then flashes back to the summer of 1985, when Amanda, fresh out of college and yearning for a career in the entertainment industry, takes a lowly job at a talk show, hoping to rise quickly to the top. Her longtime best friend/boy friend, overachieving golden-boy James, goes East to attend law school, leaving her behind in the crumbling Laurel Canyon hovel she shares with her lowlife, drug-dealing brother and her neglected baby nephew, whom she raises. Things look up when she falls for Gabe, her brother's multiracial friend; and readers will wonder why their blazing love failed and how Amanda ended up with a louse like James. Grazer achieves a cinematic intensity that will keep readers turning pages to return to 1995 and a storybook ending. Diana Tixier Herald
