Some quite good William stories here, and for the first time his group of friends (the Outlaws) starts taking its definitive shape. William Brown is a great literary creation, and still funny a century later. ( ) I read the William books as a child, and despite being an obnoxiously well behaved child, I still wanted to think of myself as an "Outlaw". I would recommend them to anyone of such an age. I think they are genuinely improving. Certainly my memory of William, as of the Swallows and Amazons, provides a well buried counter to my natural inclination towards the effete. William also provides a good lesson in free will, independent spirit and free thought. Which cannot hurt. (Unless you wanted to make an extreme reading of the William stories as a prop to the capitalist establishment...) My first William book, original edition with the Thomas Henry illustrations nice and crisp. By now (this was the fifth book in the series), Crompton had settled into the character, and was free to lampoon polite middle class society in suburban Kent (she lived in Bromley) with marvellous abandon. The scenes of adultery and drunkenness in Jasmine Villas, the fish-hook in the bishop's ear, the clandestine photos of Mr Bott, Wembly De Lucks - all wonderful stuff. I must have about 30 William books, and one day I'll add them all to LibraryThing. Just DON'T assume this is just for children! Too funny. My husband wanted to know what I was laughing and snickering at, and I had to stop and read him the chapter in which William takes the Vicar's Advent message to heart and casts aside deceit and hypocrisy - on Christmas Day. No, he didn't like the book of Church History and the mathematical instrument set his Aunt and Uncle gave him, but thank you anyway! geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
