This is a book that my siblings and I read when we were children. I just now recently re-read it, and it's full of sentimental charm. I was rooting for the horse to escape and find some happiness in places he loved and remembered. In a way, this story is more for older folk, than younger folk, because the older you are, the more you can sympathize with Charlie. Old Folk don't want to be put out to pasture until they are good and ready! Elderly Charlie has been retired by his owner. His own pasture and a tree for shade should provide a well-deserved rest for the old fellow. But Charlie misses his daily routine -- especially the hot, sweet, berry tarts from his friend Birdie, the tavern cook. What's a little fence to a big, strapping, not-so-very-old-as-he-looks fellow like Charlie? Not much! Charlie begins escaping from his retirement pasture daily, and soon has a new/old routine to keep to. Wonderful illustrations, and a charming story. This was a much-loved favorite among the many Margueritte Henry books on my shelves. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

This book has great illustrations and would be an ideal book for children in lower elementary grades. ( )
