It is a celebration of ordinariness; a beautifully composed story that is an affirmation of family and friendship. rebeccanyc: Both these books, which are among my favorites, explore the lives of families, over time and at length. Different countries, different times, but wonderful characterization and development and wonderful depictions of the worlds the families live in.
Heerlijk boek. Seth geeft een tijdsbeeld van India in de jaren 50 en behandelt alles: liefde, tradities, de problemen van een nieuwe staat, religie, Engelsen vs Indiërs, zakenleven, uitgaan, etc. Wordt in recensies qua vertelstijl vergeleken met het werk van de Russische meesters, en doet inderdaad denken aan Anna Karenina (inclusief de eerste ontmoeting op een station), maar dan zonder de zware melancholie en met de nodige Engelse ironie. Een aanrader! ( )
Een heerlijk boek om te lezen. Een boek waarin ik zo op kon gaan, dat het was alsof ik ook daadwerkelijk in India was. Ik kon de heerlijke geuren ruiken, de biryani proeven en met op de achtergrond de muziek van de cd Ganga, heb ik een heerlijke paar leesdagen gehad. Het is al een dik boek, maar van mij had het nog wel even door mogen gaan. Misschien geen literatuur van hoog niveau, maar zo ontspannend om te lezen. Ik zag het allemaal voor me. ( )
zeer vlot geschreven, mooie beschrijvingen, een leuke inkijk in het leven in India (het bestrijkt het leven in de dorpen, het leven van de aristocratie, de universiteit, cricket, en dit alles met kennis van zaken) 3 jaar na de splitsing met Pakistan. Je wordt volledig meegezogen in het verhaal: . Het volgt een bepaalde gedachtengang, associatief, wat het onvoorspelbaar maakt. Net een persoon dat een verhaal vertelt met alle gedachtengangen en nevenverhalen. De omschrijvingen zijn soms te omstandig, en het had best een honderdtal pagina's korter gekund. Het vergt wat inspanning om hem helemaal uit te lezen, maar zoals gezegd, werkelijk de moeite. ( )
