The moving story of a young girl who learns of her grandfather's experience in Auschwitz and then helps him overcome his sensitivity about the number on his arm, this award-winning picture book gives young children just enough information about the Holocaust without overwhelming them. I liked this book for many different reasons. I liked this book because the author took the story of a family and informed readers about the events that took place during the Holocaust. For example, the author wrote, “There were a great many problems in Germany. Hitler blamed them all on the Jews.” The author wrote this book in a way that a young reader would be able to understand. The illustrations included photographs that would be from that time period. For example, the illustrator included a photograph of people wearing the yellow star. This showed readers the events that people went through during this time. This informational book was written in a way that would capture reader’s attention because the author included a story about a young girl asking her grandfather about the Holocaust. The depth and amount of information was also appropriate for readers because the author does not includes graphic or hard language that would confuse readers. This is the wonderful story of a grandfather's recount on the Holocaust, as he explains it to his granddaughter. It begins by her asking about the number that is tattooed on his arm. This is a great story to tie into a history lesson, especially when discussing the Holocaust. I would use this for third grade on up. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
