Laymon's Cuts follow the lives of a psycho killer, a down and out pregnant woman, aspiring actress, aging teacher, and many others. The story starts off slow trying to develop the characters which felt incomplete especially the antagonist. The biggest issue I had with the book was the character choices. There were times when a character did or said something that did not make sense. At times, the dialogue was weak, it rarely propelled the story forward. However, I did find the action scenes captivating and gruesome. The ending was very satisfying. ( ) Albert is a young man with a fetish for cutting up young women; the slower the better. Half the book is spent following Albert on his cut-a-palooza across the US and the rest felt like a bizarre game of Clue with a slue of wacky characters trying to hook up with each other. To me, this book felt much more like 'gore erotica' than a horror novel. The book was a quick read with a few very gruesome scenes, but for the most part was disjointed and uninteresting. for me, Laymon is hit-or-miss. this one is a pretty decent-sized hit. it involves one of my favorite themes in the horror fiction genre, that of young serial killers, and it does it fairly well. we are disturbed and disgusted by the book's antagonist, and develop sympathy for the supporting characters. however, most of the scenes are derivative from lots of other scenes from lots of other books that came before this one. the novel nature of this book concerns the relationships that flower (or die) in the midst of the drama and horror. i took half a star off because the ending was wholly unbelievable. Laymon can do unbelievable and get away with it in his pulpier stuff, but in something as straightforward and gritty as this tale, it falls flat on incredulous ears. it's a fun, quick read when you're ready for some classic, nasty Laymon violence. pick it up. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
