Laura's sister elopes and moves to Europe, her mother abandons the family without even a note, thus leaving Laura to take care of her father and 3 brothers, the cooking, the cleaning, everything. This is Laura's coming-of-age story and her coming-to-grips-with-her-mother's-abandment story. An older, married man with children kisses her at a town New Year's Eve party, and that begins an affair that ends up having very tragic consequences. Great writing; but, again, we have the tired story of older man initiates teen-age girl into sex and, voila, she turns into a nymphomaniac, Could this be a male author? Turn to the back cover and.....yes. Too bad he had to use that male-fantasy cliche in what otherwise was a wonderful book. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

It's 1960 in the Panhandle town of Charnelle, Texas--a year and a half since sixteen-year-old Laura Tate's mother boarded a bus and mysteriously disappeared. Assuming responsibility for the Tate household, Laura cares for her father and three brothers and outwardly maintains a sense of calm. But her balance is upset and the repercussions of her family's struggles are revealed when a chance encounter with a married man leads Laura into a complicated relationship for which she is unprepared. As Kennedy battles Nixon for the White House, Laura must navigate complex emotional terrain and choose whether she, too, will flee Charnelle. A heartfelt portrait of a young woman's reckoning with the paradoxes of love--eloquent, tender, and heart-wrenching--K. L. Cook's unforgettable debut novel marks the arrival of a significant new voice in American fiction. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

Cook does a great job of capturing small town Texas Panhandle at the dawn of the 60s. The characters are believably flawed. He makes us care about all of them – even the guy, who of course should have known better.
