I enjoyed watching the video of this book more that others. This is the first book I've watched be signed while read. I think this book would be a great example to show that deaf and hard of hearing students are not as different as others. The students liked to talk about their summer, draw, play, read and write like other students and that it went through the process of going from ASL to typing and mailing the students' pen pal letter. An interesting part of the book to me was that even the teacher wore hearing aids. I like that this book did not portray the students as less than. My favorite part of this book was the song part. Moses goes to a school where all of the students and teachers are deaf. It is the first day of school and we get to see all the things Moses and his classmates do and learn. I thought this book was fantastic and portrayed deafness in a positive way. I also thought it was extremely educational as I was unaware ASL is different from spoken English. I loved that each page had a sign language lesson at the bottom to teach students phrases. I really don't have enough words to describe how much I loved this book and I plan on reading more from the series. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to be more educated about the deaf community, ( )

Moses Goes to School is about Moses and his friends who attend a special public school for deaf and hard of hearing. The students are all excited to see one another after the summer break and despite their disability, the students can still communicate with one another through signing. The students have accessible technology to aid them in communication like hearing aids and special computers. I loved how this book had sign language throughout it and I especially liked the song "Take Me Out to the Ballgame." I love how the children in this book can partake in activities just like you and me! ( )

I really liked this book for a few reasons. First, i liked that this book showed ASL interpretations so readers can learn ASL. Second, i liked that this book is relatable for kids. Everyone has had their first day of school so they can relate to the feelings Moses had and the stories you read. This book is about Moses' first day of school, it goes on talking about what each of his friends did in school. It shows his first day throughout the whole book. I really liked the illustrations within the book too. I would recommend this book to everyone. ( )

I really liked the book "Moses Goes to School"; it is the perfect informative book for children who do not know a lot about the deaf and hard of hearing and would like to learn more. The story follows Moses, a young boy who is deaf, as he goes through his first day of school with a class entirely made up of other deaf/hard of hearing children. The students work on the computers and practice reading and writing in English; the reader learns that ASL and English are two different languages, something that I myself was not even aware of. The writing is engaging for young readers because each page features a separate panel with a portion of the written text in ASL—Moses is shown signing sentences such as: “My friend wears hearing aids” and “I live in an apartment”. Later on in the story, their teacher Mr. Samuels uses a boom box to play Take Me Out to the Ball Game, the students can feel the vibrations to follow along with the tune and they use sign language throughout the entire song so the reader can follow along and practice performing the song in ASL too. These illustrations enhance the story and make it much more realistic—this is not simply a fictional character but rather, Moses is the representative of millions of children who communicate using sign language and it is important that children who are not hard of hearing have opportunities to step into those shoes. The book exposes young readers to the world of ASL and encourages them to try to learn through experience and attempting to use the language themselves while they read the story; this added text feature is a smart way to leave a lasting impression on the reader and is effective in its ability to engage the audience. The big idea of the story is that children who are deaf and hard of hearing are no different from children who hear—the only difference is the way in which they communicate; the best part is that those who can hear have the ability to practice and use ASL to break down the barrier between them. Having a disability does not define you or deprive you from living a life similar to those around you—it is only a matter of equal opportunity and accommodation. ( )
