Anne, an eleven-year-old orphan, is sent by mistake to live with a lonely, middle-aged brother and sister on a Prince Edward Island farm and proceeds to make an indelible impression on everyone around her. Anne is an orphan from Nova Scotia. She is eventually sent to live on Prince Edward Island. A family needs a worker for their farm, so they decide to adopt a boy from the orphanage. They accidentally send Anne in his place. Anne turns out to be very intelligent and studious. She befriends many people at school, and makes others happy with her cheerful personality. Anne decides that she wants to teach, so at 16, she went to get a teaching license. When her family's home life falls apart, she gives up everything to help them out. This story teaches that even if you have even if you have everything you want, you shouldn't forget kindness. Anne was helped out when she was young, so at the end of the book, she returns the favor. My wife and I watched the excellent PBS miniseries back in the late 1980's or early 1990's. We then bought "Anne of Green Gables Three Volumes in One" by Lucy Maud Montgomery, and read it out loud to each other. There are quite a few laugh-out-loud parts, and are great memories of the first few years of our marriage. Jump ahead 20+ years, and I was reading the DEADLY boring Black Hills by Dan Simmons. In a bold and rare move, I did something I never do: read two books at once. This gets 5 stars as it fits my definition: a book I would re-read. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
