A typical folk tale that teaches caring, sharing as well as linking into the reason for seasonal change. A good book for also for discussing personalities ( ) A blacksmith had three sons. He tells them he will have to pick one to take over his shop. The blacksmith tells his sons he will choose his heir by whoever brings back the most valuable object. The eldest brother went off the next morning, but got lost in the forest. The second brother also went the next morning but got lost too. The youngest brother, Half, also went into the forrest, but he knew it well and did not get lost. Half helped a raven that was stuck in a tree. The raven explained why he could not get out of the tree himself. The raven told Half of the Golden Heart burried to keep the seasons cycling. The raven was put in charge of keeping the Golden Heart's location a secret. Half wanted to know where the Golden Heart is so the raven gave him a clue. Half sat pondering the clue until his brothers found him. Half told them what he was doing but they just laughed at him. The brothers figured out the hint, and being greedy, they rushed to the Golden Heart. The eldest brother stabbed the second brother so he could win the heart. The heart turned to ice and the sky got dark. Half took the frozen heart to his father to thaw. His father was already frozed so Half had to thaw the heart himself. Half saved the seasons and everything was sunny and warm again. I like this story because it teaches children not to be greedy. I think it would be a good book for 2-4 grades to read. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
