De tekenstijl, het verhaal, de personages, werkelijk alles vind ik prachtig aan dit boek.
Laat ik eerst met de twee hoofdpersonages beginnen, Britten en Brüglightly. Britten is een wat sobere, ingetogen detective bijgestaan door zijn maatje, Brüglightly, een theezakje. Ja, dat lees je goed, een theezakje is een hoofdpersonage zonder dat het cartoonesk wordt.
De tekeningen zijn allemaal levensecht waarbij de menselijke vormen wellicht ietsje stripachtiger zijn. Dit is ook al aan de tekening op de kaft te zien.
Het hele boek is bijna zwart-wit maar weer net niet omdat er soms een beetje kleur wordt gebruikt om de sfeer nog wat sterker te maken. Er zijn ook wisselingen van aquarelachtige taferelen naar gedetailleerde potloodtekeningen. Allemaal een feest voor het oog.
En dan het verhaal, een mysterie dat zich langzaam ontvouwt. Spannend opgebouwd en op een natuurlijke manier verlopend.
Ik kan niet anders dan alleen maar de loftrompet over dit meesterwerk steken. (
