Colin Bannock is hiding quite the secret. By day, he's a smooth-talking lawyer. After hours, he is someone else entirely. He corners Arnold Landon, wanting him to join his society of history fanatics. Appalled, Arnold declines outright. He's never been a joiner and, besides, he has enough on his plate already. He is hunting for a lost and ancient treasure. And he knows the hiding place is close. Then Bannock's body washes up on the banks of the River Tyne, battered and bloated beyond recognition. Was he also chasing the mythic treasure? The race is on to claim the hoard. And someone out there will stop at nothing to get there first. "The skillful Mr. Lewis has made Arnold Landon an unforgettable character." "A pleasure to pick up." "Right atmosphere of menace in this highly charged mystery." From having read a chunk of other grail stuff the name Sinclair was a pretty obviously a Templar link. And it was interesting to see warring factions having issues. The reality of the grail is hinted at but it's not stated which story is the true story.
Arnold Landon is being sidelined when he finds a very good forgery of the head part of a turin shroud type creation. Because of it he looks into the church where it was found and clues lead him to a Templar Organisation. When the head of this organisation is found dead things start looking a bit dangerous for Landon, and one of the witnesses is claiming that the last person to see the victim is Landon. Chief Inspector Culpepper gets involved with the murder while Landon searches to find out more about the templars being led in different directions by the Templar Group and Sinclair both of which keep throwing conflicting stories at Langdon.
I did like the twist at the end too. ( )
