She's 12 years old for most of the book, and tells the story of her family's trek from Kentucky to the Indiana wilderness. This is mostly about her and Abe dealing with their hard father, the death of their mother, and their father's remarriage. There are plenty of details about pioneer life. Sally's voice is distinct, but not quite interesting enough to make me love this book. ( ) This is a great story about Sally Lincoln, Abe Lincoln's older sister. Sally suddenly has a voice from history that tells a realistic story of what life looked like and sounded like back in the early days of their family. Harry Mazer provides a look into what their lives were really about. The loss of their mother and the impact on the Lincoln family is clearly told. The harsh realities of life in the territories is painted with great detail. Sally's adjustment to her new mother and siblings paints a realistic picture of a family redefining itself. The content and vocabulary are accessible for a 5th through 7th grade reader. Appropriate for upper elementary readers, this historical fiction book follows a few years in the life of Sally Lincoln, the older sister of Abraham Lincoln. The book begins around 1816, when Sally is nine years old.
